Knob Creek 10 Year Rye is doing what older ryes do. The rye spices have mellow out a bit, and the flavors have become quite complex. What is a little surprising to me is how much tart orange citrus is present. Often that has mellowed quite a bit at this age, similar to the rye spices. Nonetheless, in this case, it has not. The combination of bourbon and confectionary like flavors, such as brown and powdered sugar, combined with the spice and citrus of the rye, makes this a delicious pour of Whiskey.
The nose is full and rich with brown sugar sweetness, with an added dusting of powdered sugar, to boot. There are the expected rye spices, but they are relatively mild. Orange citrus is surprisingly dominant, with an added hint of anise, for good measure, all on a background of fresh rye bread. The taste brings similar flavors, starting off fairly sweet with brown sugar and honey, but transitioning to a bit spicier and tart as the flavors turn more to orange citrus and rye spice. Some tannins, black pepper and dry oak appear later on. The fairly long finish has moderate black pepper spice and increasing dryness, with mild dry oak and growing barrel char later on. Dryness and mild char linger in my mouth, although there is an overall pleasant warmth, too.
